Christmas is the only holiday that I do it up with decorating. I even went a little further down that path this year. I put a lot more things up in the house. I covered the beds in holiday linens. I bought more lights and put them everywhere. I needed that extra holiday spirit that lots of decorations gives me. More lights, more sparkle, more joy and love.
The main tree in the house is about 18 feet tall. The tree pretty much sits in the middle of my house reaching up into the heights of the second story ceiling. A 21 footer will touch the ceiling and you’d really have to crank your neck to see the top. An 18 footer lands between the railing and the ceiling and is the perfect height. A nice silver tip is what I like to get and fill the branches with lights, ornaments and beaded garland.
I have had this 6 foot artificial tree for several years. I put that upstairs and loaded it up with all of the miscellaneous ornaments I had left after decorating the other trees.
I picked up a new slim 5 foot artificial tree this year to put in a corner in my bedroom. I then also had to pick up a bunch of ornaments as I wanted to create a woodland theme on this tree. Most of the ornaments for this were found at the Dollar Tree and Walmart, along with a few that I already had. I think this tree turned out the cutest.
I decorate the banister and put lights on the windows and other places that I think need them. I have a lot of different types of miscellaneous decorations that I used to put on the window sills but that didn’t work very well. So I decided to put them all on the mantle with some lighted greenery and a lighted wreath. I really like the way it looks.
I made a little coffee/hot chocolate station on the counter. I decorated it up with some red ribbon, put red and green ribbon around the jars, labeled the jars with their contents – cocoa, chai, marshmallows. I usually have one of these out anyway, but this looks more festive all decked out in ribbon with holiday mugs and candy canes.
Here are two beds spiced up in their holiday splendor. I also had twinkle lights on the windows and little decorations elsewhere. I really like decorating the bedrooms up a bit. Especially with company staying in them. It makes it more festive.
The front door received some garland around it and then these live potted mini trees which will ultimately be planted out in the yard. The greenery around the tree in the black planters came from the yard – pine branches, asparagus branches, leftover branches from the Christmas tree trimmings – it’s the first time I’ve foraged for greenery in my yard and I’m liking it. I also put clear fairy lights on each tree which makes the whole display pop at night. Oh and the wreath which was made for me by a friend years ago.
I had picked up this terrarium/glass house at a thrift store last year and hadn’t gotten around to doing anything with it. It needed the bottom wood piece replaced and a couple of the glass pieces were broken. It is actually more of a plexi-glass which makes it a lot lighter and also easier to replace. So I fixed it up and cleaned it up. I did not paint it as I wanted the vintage peeling paint look to remain. I put some white cloth I had to cover the wooden base to act as snow and put in some flickering flameless LED candles that I had gotten from Gardeners Supply Company. I then took some greenery and pine cones and berries that came from a disassembled older candle arrangement that my now ex-mother-in-law had made for me, and strategically placed them all around the candles until I liked the way it looked. I also put in a couple of little birds. I really like the way it turned out. The top of this house comes off so it is easy to change the contents around or light your candles if need be. The nice thing about these particular candles is that they have remotes so I don’t have to touch anything once it is set up. I am loving the way this turned out.
I think I will leave this Winter scene in here until Spring rolls around and then do maybe an Easter/Spring type of display.
On the outside I put lights around the house, a lighted wreath and garland on the gate at the driveway, lights around the gazebo, lighted candy canes going down the driveway along the edge of the lawn, I put lights around a pine tree and lighted deer on the lawn. It is quite a lighted spectacle but not overboard. I have a few more ideas for next year.
